With the fall semester coming to a close and finals drawing near, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s first-year students participated in the First-Year Learning Communities Program’s (FYLCP) First-Year Symposium on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, in the University Center ballrooms. More than 2,400 first-year students presented their research via poster or PowerPoint presentation, answered questions and discussed their findings with interested attendees.

22 Islander Nursing Students Join Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society

A total of 22 new members were inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing on Dec. 14, in the Performing Arts Center at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Each inductee received a lavender and white honorary cord, along with an inductee ribbon from Eta Omicron chapter officers. Eta Omicron is the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International and was chartered in 1984.

In recognition for their professional accomplishments, including eliminating racism, empowering women and being a role model for young girls, Sherdeana Owens, DDS, MPA, assistant professor in the College of Nursing and Health Science (CONHS) and health science coordinator at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and Deborah Fullerton, curator of exhibitions at the Art Museum of South Texas (AMST), were both chosen as a 2018 Y Women in Careers, an award sponsored by YWCA Corpus Christi for the last 38 years. AMST is an affiliate of the Island University.

One Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi professor has taken the next step in furthering her career and advancing the careers of others. Dr. Jessica Peck, associate professor of nursing DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC, CNE, CNL, has been named as a fellow to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) for her outstanding work in policy-making, advocating for pediatric victims of human trafficking on a local, state and national level. Peck is the second Island University professor to be accepted as an AANP fellow.

Leadership was the topic of conversation during the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s annual Adele Bemis Leadership Lecture Series featuring Nora Frasier, MBA, RN, FACHE, NEA-BC. With the recent influx of nurses stepping into leadership roles, Fraiser’s presentation titled, “Enhancing Authentic Leadership Behaviors in Nurse Leaders,” was a perfect choice to help ready nursing students for their expanded career responsibilities. How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard – this is the sentiment that drives Clarissa Lara to study the profession of nursing. Lara, who is working to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, says being a nurse isn’t just a job, it’s a career that includes lifelong personal connections with patients. Nursing is also about bettering situations for others, which is why Lara was eager to conduct research focused on helping non-traditional nursing students succeed in the classroom. Lara is one of 1,141 Islander students graduating during two spring 2018 commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 12. The ceremony is the largest in the University’s history.
